Abstract

Abstract
The composition of human milk can be specifically adapted with newborn’s need. It makes human milk very special and individual because of its different composition for each baby. The aim of the research was to assess the difference between the average protein concentrations of breast milk based on the infants’ birth weight. The research was an observational study with cross sectional study conducted in Makassar City. Samples were selected using purposive sampling method consisting of 42 samples of human milk from lactating mother who gave birth at term and exclusive breastfeeding. They were divided into two groups, i.e. human milk in normal group and low birth weight baby (LBWB) group. The respondents were interviewed to obtain characteristic data in terms of name, age, education and occupation. Breast milk sample 30 ml was taken to test total protein with Kjedhal method. The data were analyzed using independent t-test by comparing the breast milk total protein concentration between the LBWB and normal group. The results indicate that the average breast milk’s protein concentration of LBWB group (1,1 ± 0,3 g/dl) is higher  than the  normal group (0,9 ± 0,3 g/dl), but it showed insignificant result statistically (p>0,05). In conclusion, there is no difference of breast milk’s protein concentration in lactating mother of normal and LBWB
